The Cheneviere was my home for 2 nights to explore the area and D Day Sites. I’ve sold this property, as well as touring, for many years and thought it would be a good idea to visit. In 2019, Normandy will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of D Day, with that, if you are interested in visiting next summer – book now. I would suggest steering clear of the end of May into June – you’ll likely not be able to get a room. Availability for drivers and guides will be limited as well. Now that I’ve experienced the property and sites firsthand, I’m excited to share my expertise with you!
This Historic Chateau has 29 well-appointed rooms. I had a Junior Suite overlooking the grounds of the property. It was large with a small bathroom – tub/shower combo, the décor traditional. All rooms are different – last year they renovated 6 bathrooms located in the main building. They are extending their Gastronomic restaurant and its kitchen which will be ready when they re-open in the spring, and will turn the restaurant near the pool into a bistro offering a more casual option.
On November 28th, I arrived at the Charles de Gaulle Airport. As soon as I disembarked the plane, there was an Airport Concierge waiting for me. He escorted me through passport control, no waiting in long lines, and assisted with getting my luggage at the carousel. Once we had my bags, he coordinated with the driver for the meet and greet. The driver transferred me to the Paris St Lazarre Rail station where I took the train to Bayeux (approximately 2 hours). The Chateau arranged for a taxi to pick me up, the transfer took 15 minutes from the rail station to Cheneviere. On arrival I was greeted by their lovely reception team. Slightly exhausted after traveling during the night/day of travel, I had a light lunch. This Virtuoso property is an ideal location to visit the WWII sites.
On November 29th, I arranged for a full day tour of visits to Arromanches-les-Bains, Pont du Hoc, Utah & Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery to see the lowering of the flag and taps, an emotional experience. On the drive back to the Chateau, we visited a Calvados distillery to have a tasting. Calvados is distilled from cider made from specially grown and selected apples, from over 200 named varieties which was a nice way to end the day.
I would definitely suggest staying at least 3 nights in Normandy, 4 if you have the time. There are so many beautiful places to visit like Mont St Michel, Bayeux, Honfleur and Rouen. In my opinion, The Cheneviere is the best Chateau to stay!
